Postseason Q&A

Who races at districts?

There is only a single varsity race for boys and girls, with teams limited to seven runners in each.  Our top seven boys and girls will race.  This will be determined based on performances this season, with priority given to recent races.

Our eighth runner for each gender will be on standby as alternates in the event of illness or injury.  The alternates will train with the team the week of districts, will be in uniform at districts, and will warm up with team and be ready to race in the event that a situation arises.

Who goes to districts

Given the above information and the size of our team, every runner will either race or be an alternate.  Therefore, the entire team will attend districts.

When/where are districts?

The district races this year are at Oak Ridge High School on Saturday, November 1.

What else do I need to know about districts

All of the meet information and logistics is on the Google Calendar but has been reproduced below.  Do make note of the $6 admission fee for all spectators.  To my knowledge, this will be collected in cash.

Bus will leave at 7:00AM.
10:00AM Class 1 Boys
11:00AM Class 1 Girls
11:45AM  Awards

Are there any special policies for districts?

This year NFHS and thus the state has changed its policy on inhalers for the district and state meets.  Athletes are free to use inhalers as they wish before or after their race.  However, in order to use their inhaler during the race (from the moment they step to the starting line to when they finish the race), they must have a physician's statement.  If this applies to your runner, I will need the physician statement prior to 10/31 so that I can share it with the district meet director and the state.

Who practices the week of state?

The winter sports season begins the Monday following districts.  For any runner participating in basketball or cheer who did not qualify for state as an individual or team (the team includes alternates), they should report to practices for those sports and should not attend cross country practice the week of state.  Those not participating in winter sports who did not qualify are welcome to continue practicing with the team the week of state, but this is optional.

Who races at state

The top 30 individuals from each race at the district meet qualify for state.  In addition, the top four teams also qualify and can race seven runners at the state meet.  Other than situations impacted by illness or injury, we will generally run the same seven individuals at state as districts.  Once again we are permitted alternates.  Given the busy state schedule and course restrictions, the alternates will not be able to run a mock race on the course.  However, they will warm up with the team and be ready to race if a situation arises.

Who goes to state?

If the team for a gender qualifies, the seven racers and alternates will travel to state with the school.  Their lodging and some of their meals will also be provided by the school.  If the team for a gender does not qualify, only individual qualifiers for that gender will be allowed to travel with the school.  Any other runners may still attend the state meet.  However, they will be responsible for their own transportation, lodging, and meals.  They will also be regarded as a spectator and charged admission.

When/where are the state races?

Our races at the state meet are at Gans Creek Recreation Area in Columbia on Saturday, November 8.

What else do I need to know about state?

All of these details may be found in the Google Calendar but have been reproduced below.  Please note the $12 admission fee.  Digital tickets must be purchased prior to admission on the state website.  Cash admission is not available.

9:00AM Class 1 Boys
9:45AM Class 1 Girls
10:30AM Class 1 Awards

Please also note that the parking and admission process at state takes significantly longer than at most meets.  Please plan to arrive at the course well before the start of the race(s) you wish to watch.

What are the travel details for state?

A more detailed itinerary will be released following districts, but the team (boys and girls qualifiers) will travel to state on Friday, November 7.  We will have a sendoff from school at  9:15AM following the 8AM Mass.  We will return Saturday evening.

What about hotels for parents?

The school neither provides nor reserves hotel rooms for parents.  Any parents wishing to attend the meet will be responsible for organizing their own lodging.  At this point rooms will be difficult to reserve given the size of the state meet and Mizzou home football game the same weekend.  However, if you wait until the Monday after districts, many teams and individuals who reserved rooms but didn’t qualify for state will be cancelling, so often time rooms do pop up.

Will there be a team dinner before state?

No.  We do not do a pasta dinner before state.  We will have an end-of-season/Christmas family dinner in early December.  Stay tuned for details in the coming weeks.

What about state shirts/hoodies?

The state does set up a booth at the meet where you can buy meet shirts, hoodies, sock caps, etc.  However, our team also does state qualification shirts and/or hoodies.

This year we will offer a short-sleeve shirt and a hoodie.  These are made from high-quality material and will have a state-bound design for our school on the front and all qualifiers on the back.  The front design will be released the week of October 20.  We have to get items out on Thursday 11/6 so that runners can wear them for the sendoff, but the results of Saturday’s district meet obviously affect who will order them as well as the design on the back.  That’s a very small turnaround window.

To make life easier on Hayden Creative, our screen printer, we will be doing an early bird order before the district race for those who know they will be ordering regardless.  Items ordered by Wednesday 10/29 at 3pm will receive a discount.  Regular orders will close at 3pm on Sunday 11/2.  Price breakdown will be as follows:
