Midnight Marathon

When:  August 16, 7:00-11:00 PM
Where:  Seminary Picnic Grounds
What:   A 141 x 300m team relay with a total length of just over a marathon (26.2 miles).  There will be lights, music, food, drinks, and games for parents and for athletes when they aren’t running.
Why:  This is meant to be a fun bonding experience for athletes while exposing them to their first larger dose of race pace.  It is also an opportunity for our parents to socialize and get to know each other.

The Run

Runners will be assigned to a group of three runners.  Each runner has an assigned number of reps and an approximate goal pace (5k effort).  Only three runners will be completing reps at any given point.  Before they run, each runner should do a dynamic warmup and a 10-minute warmup run.  The first runner in each group should warm up at 7pm.  Every other runner should start warming up when the runner above them begins running.

Runner A will start at the lower end (see picture below) and run the length of the yellow straightaway.  Runner B will be waiting at the upper end and will receive the baton from Runner A.  Runner B will then run the straightaway the other way back to the lower end.  At the same time, Runner A will do a recovery jog out and back along the upper blue segment.

Runner C will be at the lower end of the straightaway and will receive the baton from Runner B and will run the straightaway to the upper end.  Meanwhile, the Runner B will do a recovery jog out and back along the lower blue segment.

When Runner C reaches the top end of the straightaway, Runner A will have finished their recovery jog and will take the baton and run back down the straightaway.  Meanwhile Runner C will do a recovery jog along the top blue segment.  When Runner A reaches the bottom, Runner B will have finished their recovery jog and will take the baton and run back up the straightaway as Runner A starts another recovery jog on the lower segment.  Runner B will then hand off the baton at the top to Runner C, who will have finished their recovery jog.

This process will continue in the same fashion.  When Runner A  finishes their assigned reps, A new runner will take over their position, then the third, and so forth.

If a runner wants, they may change into spikes for their last 3 reps.  They may do this in place of a recovery jog after their fourth to last rep.

We will have a running clock keeping track of our overall time.  Ultimately we’ll see how we finish!

We will grill hamburgers and hot dogs.  There will also be chips.  Water and Body Armor will be available, as well as snow cones. You are welcome to bring other food and drinks, but in compliance with MSHSAA and school policies, we do ask that there be no alcoholic beverages.

Games

We will have a number of lawn games available.  We'll try to get a fire going.  Picnic tables will be out, but feel free to bring lawn chairs as well.
