Our last meet of the regular season didn't feature a huge lineup. Most of our athletes chose to run at the Conference Meet. To avoid excessive fatigue and allow for training in the build-up to districts, we chose to rest most of these athletes. Only Luke--who only had two 5Ks under his belt this season--was given the chance to race again. Adding in Tristin and Bo who didn't race at Conference, that gave us just three boys racing in the meet. The meet featured just a single high school boys race, with 75 young men crossing the finish line. Of those Luke was the first from St. Vincent. He went out at a pretty spicy pace (the fastest first mile of his career). That did cost him in the latter half of the race, but he was at least able to hold his position the rest of the way, finishing one place shy of a medal in 21st. His time was 3 seconds slower than last year, but that's incredible given the shutdown he went through earlier in the season. It marked a 110-second improvement over his race just 5 days earlier at Conference and the third fastest finish of his career. Bo was our next finisher. He also ran an aggressive first mile (the fastest of his career), but despite slowing down some in the second mile, he still managed to pass three runners. The final mile brought him within reach of a large pack of boys. He pushed through the final half mile to get in front of 6 of them. His finish time was 2:16 seconds faster than at the North County Meet last year. It was also a 46-second improvement on his season best back at our home meet. It even nosed out his time at districts last year by 18 seconds to mark the fastest time he's ever run. But the PR party was just getting started. Tristin was our final boy across the finish line. In a common theme for the day, he also ran his fastest first mile ever by quite a bit. Apparently motivated by a bet with another athlete, he continued pushing the rest of the race, passing 9 more athletes the rest of the way as he ran a final mile nearly identical to his first. He had run a PR in his last race at Notre Dame, but his finish time at North County marked an improvement of 101 seconds from that point and over two minutes from the start of the season. All three of our boys ran season bests. As we look toward district, we hope that can stand as a foretaste of some more great performances to come in the final weeks of the season!
