Tools of the TradeIn the previous two installments in our summer series, I discussed the when and how of our training. This week I want to narrow in on the what, beginning to look at the specific tools for a successful runner. By comparison to other sports, cross country requires one of the smallest amounts of equipment for training. There are certainly plenty of ancillary tools to improve strength, coordination, and mobility. However, at a bare minimum, runners simply need their bodies. That being said, most individuals prefer running in suitable clothes. While I did have a teammate in high school who showed up to his first day of training with the team in jean shorts, most students and parents have enough background in athletics to know that moisture-wicking clothing, non-cotton socks, sports bras, and compression shorts are all safer bets than their less athletic alternatives. However, the two items that tend to generate the most discussion in the running community are shoes and watches. I want to focus on the former this week and try to cut through some of the marketing hype and misinformation. At the Heart |
