Sign of Success
Earlier today Reagan signed to run competitively at Saint Louis University. She is only the second athlete in our program's history to choose to run in college. We are proud of all Reagan has done as a member of our team and are excited to see her success at the next level!
Last Chance to RSVP for End-of-Season Dinner
If you plan to attend the end-of-season dinner this weekend, please RSVP by tomorrow, Tuesday 11/18, so that the Nations can adequately prepare. They are once again graciously providing meat for the dinner, and so a head count would be a big help. You may use the link below. You can also see the food items others have already signed up for so we don't end up with 7 Caesar salads.
Past Home Meet Shirts
Home meet shirts from the previous three years are available in limited sizes. They can be purchased at the end-of-season dinner. These are perfect is someone is looking for a replacement or needs one for a project like a senior quilt. Cost for the shirts are as follows:
2025: $5 2024: $4 2023: $3 Parent Survey
With the season over, we're already looking to the future and what lies ahead. However, that begins by looking in the rear-view mirror. Parents play a huge role in the success of the team. They also bring a unique perspective to many team activities that coaches and athletes can't provide. Therefore, parent feedback is valuable for the ongoing improvement of our program.
To help with this, a parent survey has been created and can be found here. The password was shared in the GroupMe. The survey covers a lot of areas and takes some time. As an incentive to complete it, any parent who completes the survey by 11/30 will be entered into a drawing for a picnic blanket. It's embroidered with the SV athletics logo and can also be zipped up to use as a seat cushion. Iron Testing
The end of the season is a great time to have an athlete's ferritin levels tested, especially while they are taking a break from running. Well-respected coaches and trusted sports medicine experts recommend having males without a history of low iron tested once a year and females (who are usually at greater risk) without a history tested twice per year.
You can find a full explanation of the importance of ferritin for endurance athletes here. It is important to test for ferritin, and not simply the hemoglobin of standard blood tests. Hemoglobin gives the iron in the blood, while ferritin gives the iron in the body. Hemoglobin is like the money in someone's wallet, while ferritin is like the money in the bank. Someone could have plenty of money in their wallet, but if that's the last of their savings, they're not in a good financial position. Seeing their bank balance will give a much better idea of their long-term financial viability. In the same way, looking at ferriting levels is going to help spot a problem well before it would show up elsewhere. As a rule of thumb, testing in the morning at least 48 hours removed from a hard workout and while free of any infection/illness is the ideal time. For a cross country runner to be successful, the goal is a ferritin level over 40, with 30 being the absolute minimum tolerable level. Levels lower than that might be fine for the general population, but they won't end well for a runner. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Mr. McLain. Mark Your Calendars
