The Big Digital Downlow

7/25 Newsletter

7/25/2025

Back to Normal

The Week Ahead

Next week marks our final week of summer training together.  It will mostly be business as usual, with Friday being the big exception.

Monday 7/28 (7:00-8:30AM):  Neural Day at School

Tuesday 7/29 (7:00-9:00AM):  Aerobic Repeats at Back Loop of Course

Wednesday 7/30 (7:00-8:00AM):  Fun day (water balloon extravaganza) at school.  No paint this week, but lots of water.  Old shoes, a towel, and possibly a change of clothes are all recommended.

Thursday 7/31 (7:00-8:30AM):  Easy Run at Legion Lake Trail.

Friday 7/25 (7:00-9:00AM):  Scavenger Hunt at the Soccer Park upper parking lot.  Team Breakfast to follow at Caden's house (4406 Hwy N).

Adjusted Meet Schedule

As you are probably aware, our roster numbers aren't as high as we had originally hoped for this season.  Currently we are down to 7 girls and 8 boys.  With a scoring team requiring 5 runners, that isn't enough to field both varsity and JV squads.

All of the meets we had originally designated as "varsity" offer separate JV 5k races other than Willow Springs, which allows 10 runners in the varsity race instead of the usual 7.  After speaking with Coach Rigdon, it was agreed that dropping our "JV" meets made the most sense given the prospective size of our team.

The two exceptions are Perryville and North County.  We think the presence of our team at the Perryville meet is important for community solidarity.  To make this work without over-racing our runners, we will be splitting our runners up so that most runners race two of Fox, Perryville, and Notre Dame, with the hope of still having a scoring team at each.  How exactly that will play out will depend on the ultimate size of our team and other factors such as health.

All runners will have the chance to race at Conference.  If the number who do so exceeds 7 for either gender, we will run in the JV races there.  Any runners who don't race at Conference will still have the opportunity to race at North County, as will any runners unlikely to race at districts.

That gives the revised meet schedule below, which has been updated on the Google Calendar

Seminary Picnic Carousel Shifts

We were able to fill all of the open shifts for the carousel at the Seminary Picnic.  Thank you to those who signed up!

The final worker schedule is posted below.  Athletes should make sure to show up for their shift or find someone else to take their place.

Impact Testing

Just a reminder that Impact Testing will be this coming Monday and Tuesday from 11AM-2PM.

All students entering grades 9 and 11 are required to complete the test. The test will be completed in the high school computer lab and takes approximately 40-45 minutes.  Athletes may come to school to take the test at any point in the time frame on either of those two days.  If those times do not work, you will need to contact Coach Rigdon ([email protected]) to schedule an alternative time to take the test.

Sporting Event Work Schedules and Impact on Home Meet

In the past all cross country parents were expected to work a concession stand shift for one fall sporting event.  This year that has been broadened to include other sports seasons and duties beyond concessions.

In consulting with our athletic director, it was explained that even though our parents typically cover the various jobs and duties at our home meet ourselves, our parents would still be expected to sign up for shifts on the expanded list.  We could either continue to work our meet ourselves and still have to do tasks at events for other sports, or we could add our home meet duties to the pool of options and open them up to parents of other sports.  While neither option is ideal, the decision was made to go with the latter option.

Coach Rigdon will be sending out the signup form next week with available options and asked that all families sign up for 2-3 events.  A message with more details about this was sent out yesterday on Jupiter.  Our home meet duties will be included in the available options.  One consequence of this change is that most work shifts at our meet will now span both the boys and girls races.  This was done to keep the shift durations comparable to those at other sporting events, but it obviously isn't ideal for our parents wanting to watch the race their child is in.  At this point there will be no separate signup for our home meet duties at our parent meeting or afterwards.  Therefore, if you would like to work our home meet in lieu of events for other sports, please make sure to sign up when the form is made available.

Any questions or concerns about this process should be directed to Coach Rigdon and/or the Alumni Association officers.

Picnic Grounds Weedeating

Just a reminder that there will be a group weedeating the fence line along the front of the picnic grounds (red region below) at 6pm next Monday, July 28.  If you own a weedeater and would like to help, feel free to show up.  There's plenty of ground to cover.

Meet Shirt and Team Warmup Orders Close Wednesday

This is just a reminder that pre-orders for meet shirts and orders for the team warmup close this Wednesday.

Pre-ordered meet shirts will be $13, as opposed to $15 at the meet with no guarantee of one being available.  If you would like to order shirts, you may do so using this form.

Team warmups are for athletes only this year, and the 1/4 zip pullovers will be $40.  Warmups may be ordered using
this form.

Physicals

Just a reminder that a completed physical form as well as the pre-participation form must be submitted by the first day of official season (8/11) in order for an athlete to be allowed to practice.

Forms may be either be submitted to the school office or to Mr. McLain.  The current physical form can be found here (please only submit the final page).   The pre-participation form can be found here.

Hard copies of both forms will also be available at practice this week.  Athletes can ask Mr. McLain for a copy.

First Days of Practice

Normally we move training to 3:30pm once official practice starts.  But as you might be aware, the school scheduled the back-to-school open house from 3-6pm on August 11.  Therefore, we will be keeping practice at 7am on August 11 and 12.  Once school begins on 7/13, we will move practice to 3:30pm.

Shoe/Spike Sales

We're getting to the time of year when many running stores (online and brick and mortar) run sales on shoes.  If you need a new pair of trainers and/or spikes (or will in the foreseeable future), now is often a great time to save some money.

For those who don't know what spikes are, you can find a full explanation in this post.

For the next few weeks I'll be including details I find about any sales online or at local stores:

Online:
--First to the Finish has some pretty steep discounts on a number of models of spikes.   Do make sure they say cross country or XC.  Track spikes (even distance ones) are not the same thing.
--TC Running Company has some spike models on sale for men as well as for women.

In-Person:
It looks like pretty much all of the stores are lining up their sales to kick off with tax-free weekend next weekend.  If you are planning to get shoes at any of these stores, I would wait until then.  I will try to have more details available in next Friday's newsletter.

Shoe Suggestions

You can find a full post about shoes here on our website.  However, Nathan Carlson--the physical therapist who presented at our boys team camp--shared a document with me that he co-wrote.  It's a guidebook to finding the right running shoe.  It's a very deep-dive, with a discussion on the anatomy of a shoe and various tests to perform at the shoe store to not only find a good fit but ensure the shoe is free of defects.  I have attached it below in case it can be of benefit to athletes and/or parents.
