Lots of Run, Lots of Fun

We had two meets this week coming on the heels of one last Thursday.  Here are links to recaps of both the Fox Meet and the Perryville Meet.  That took up a lot of our time, but we still managed to fit in a fun round of soccer and a pasta dinner in between.

The Week Ahead

With two meets, the week ahead might be one of our busiest of the season.  The loose plan is as follows:
Monday 10/6 (3:30PM-5:15PM):  Neural Day at School.

Tuesday 10/7 (3:30-4:45PM):  Pre-Race Workout at Course

Wednesday 10/8 (3:30-5:45PM):  Race-Pace Workout at Course

Thursday 10/9 (3:30-5:00PM):  Fun Day/Recovery Run at School.

Friday 10/10 (4:00-5:30PM):  Easy Day at Sago Property (962 PCR 928).  Team dinner will follow, but unfortunately Salerno's is closed, so the location will have to change.  Stay tuned for updates there.

Saturday 10/11 (On Own):  Long run on own.

10/30 Practice

On Thursday 10/30 school dismisses at 11:30AM due to parent-teacher conferences that evening.  To work around this, practice will be from 12-1:30PM at the course.  This won't impact the pasta dinner for the week, as it is scheduled for the night before.

10/31 Practice

As was previously announced, districts will be on 11/1 at Oak Ridge.  We did not attend their meet this year (in ended up being rescheduled and wouldn't have worked well anyway), so some of our athletes are not familiar with their course.  We are out of school the day before (10/31), as is Oak Ridge.  I have reached out to the athletic director there, and we have permission to practice on their course that morning.  The plan is for the bus to leave our high school at 9AM.  We will conduct our pre-race workout at the Oak Ridge course and then return.  We should be back before noon.

Supporting Your Best Self

Below is a post from Coach Marie Markham, one of our friends at Wildwood Running, about how to handle the crazy periods of the season.  Markham coaches at Lincoln High School in Portland, where the girls finished top 20 in the nation last year.  As we approach the end of the first quarter and Homecoming Week, it seemed like a good time to share her words of wisdom:

Athletes have a lot coming at them. Sometimes it's easy to handle the demands of running, school & social life, but sometimes it's hard.

Have you ever had one of those weeks where you are exhausted?

School is a lot.
Training is a lot.
Everything just feels like a lot.

Well, that’s normal! And chances are, as you navigate adulthood that will continue to be the case. Recently, as our athletes (especially freshmen) have been navigating the beginning of the school year, I've encouraged them to take time for themselves on the weekend.

Sure, they’ll need to do schoolwork and train or race, but I’ve also challenged them to find ways to focus on three important pieces.

1. EAT: if you’re feeling exhausted, chances are you need to up your fueling. Eat foods you love, take time to cook something delicious or go to your favorite restaurant or ice cream store.

2.  SLEEP: get a great night(s) of sleep! Don’t set your alarm. Go to bed early. Take a nap. But find a way to catch up on sleep.

3.  HAVE FUN: when life feels stressful, find time to do something fun. It could be alone, with friends or family. Maybe just watching a movie is fun. Or going for ice cream. Whatever it is, make it happen!

Remember, those BIG goals are important but so is being a teenager. Living a full and happy life will create joy. I remember being a stressed-out college athlete. I was navigating student teaching, going to school, training and racing. When I deliberately took time for myself, I was happier and I raced so much better. It's much easier to go after big things when you're having fun & well rested and fueled!
